Boom-ba!

Wacky Wednesday.

Today’s selection isn’t really a song. However, I think you’ll enjoy it.

I come from Pennsylvania Dutch country. (say?) Where the last word of every sentence is a verb. (don’t cha’ know?) The PA Dutch like large gatherings, food, drinks, and simple music. The soothing sounds of Polka were some of the first to grace my ears. Awesome, right? (Catching on yet?)

So - lets just say you are at a point of utmost satisfaction following a few beers, a bratwurst with sauerkraut, and some home made potato salad. The Polka band is really starting to heat up and everyone’s tearing up the dance floor. What do you do?

Pick up a broom stick with a bunch of random percussion instruments attached to it, pick up a drum stick, and beat the shit out of it.

That’s what I call music!

I’m not entirely sure where the boom-ba came from. It has a few variations in places like Minnesota and Wisconsin - much like PA, they have nothing better to do - but they give it a totally different name. This amazing acheivement of man is all Lehigh Valley, baby!

Here’s a video of some dude explaining the whole situation. Take a look. Build your own. Join The Happy Boombadears.

They totally rip.

- MJ

* Note this is a stumpf fiddle. A bit different, but same idea. Evidently video cameras haven’t made it to PA Dutch country yet.
