Another long week that’s bound to transition into another stupendous weekend. Oh, the anticipation!
I love Fridays. Things feel a bit more loose. Everyone’s buzzing. Seratonin production is on the up. Music just feels gooood.
Friday’s are kind of like a road trip mix tape. How do you compliment the mood? You bring the Hot Shit.
Here’s a little slice.
Dance Yrself Clean by LCD Soundsystem.
This song has affectionately become known as “The Drop”. The 3:07 mark brings to life all the amazing things about Friday that just can’t be put into words.
Check it out. Leave a comment. Celebrate these wonderful bits of time we call Fridays!
Pretty amazing, this site will take a hip hop song and, using a complicated series of algorithms, will work out how smart you need to be to fully understand it.
Jay-Z - Dead Presidents 2: 16/20, University Degree (does HOV-A even have a degree?)
I know they don’t represent a completely traditional bluegrass band, but i gotto give props to Yonder Mountain String Band. They’re a hard working, talented, and progressive band that, in my opinion, has opened up bluegrass music to a whole new crowd of people. Will they ever be considered bluegrass royalty with the likes of Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs, Ricky Skaggs or Del McCoury? Probably not, but thats ok.
Not only do they write some pretty good songs, but they are a blast to see. They have a lot of fun on stage, and bring a ton of energy with them. I must say, the more recent shows i’ve seen of them haven’t been as good as in the past, but still a great time. There was one show i saw at the Wilma Theater in Missoula, MT that was off the hook. It was probably one of the rowdiest shows i’ve ever been to. At one point they had to tell the crowd to stop throwing bottles around. Crazy Times.
Well, this is a song i enjoy listening to and seeing. Its a great tune, and brings a lot of energy. I hope you enjoy.
Remember the (Aussie) summer of 2004-05? Hot damn, epic dance-rock was blowing up, but was yet to be taken mainstream by the Killers and the Bravery. And Silent Alarms was released. To this day, this is a ground breaking album for me. Banquet, the first single, is kinda epic and holds its own even now, but my favourite track is Like Eating Glass. The frenetic pace, the overdrumming, the uber-poppy chorus… all so rad. It was rock, with a heavy dance influence on the beat. And their follow-up work continued to move toward that influence.
Kele is about to drop his solo album. And it’s the progression towards proper mid-90s powerhouse you never knew you wanted (but secretly did when justified by one of the icons of Brit-dance-rock). Perhaps it’s a fanboy thing, but I really like this.
Since this is a free for all and everybody’s trying to go in - I’m next.
Lots has happened since we collectively last posted. Shit, Gary Coleman died (RIP). But over in my microcosm of rap and hip hop - there’s this youngster named Drake. He’s never even put out an album. A classic mixtape, yes (even my friends who won’t listen to an artist once he’s done more than 50k units with a commercial release put ‘So Far Gone’ on repeat - don’t front - Slaughterhouse fans, i think you’re technically still good?) and a Sprite commercial, right. He’s an overnight celebrity, and a song with the great one recently surfaced, that.. had we been writing this blog then we would’ve without a doubt covered. Thankfully, now the album has leaked and we can enjoy this instantaneous classic without any type of DJ/mixtape tag fuckery.
I’ll be the first to admit my child-like admiration for Jay-Z’s effortless cool, and ‘Light Up,’ a track that Drake had mentioned was perfect for Hov - is no disappointment. Remember Black Republicans with Nas and Jay? That was crazy. This isn’t quite beef-squashing epic, but it’s correlated somehow (and a potential passing of the torch) from old to young of the “freshest out.”**
At this point, you listen to the song, where at the end of Jay’s verse, he tries to rationalize / openly justify selling out. I couldn’t handle the tagged versions on youtube so click the link to listen directly or download if you so choose (recommended).
Holler! Day 2 back in action and i’m keepin it weird. Not too much of a write up here, as im not familiar with the band at all. I downloaded their album a few days ago and this was the first track i listened to. Its pretty cool and doesn’t seem too strange and abstract at all. At least, compared to mainstream pop these days, it seems pretty on par. I really liked it when i first heard it. Unfortunately, the rest of the album sucks, but oh well. Ya can’t win em all.
The video, on the other hand, is incredibly weird. It totally came outta nowhere and i was pretty surprised. But as most of you know, i like to keep things weird, so i enjoyed the video.
Three cheers for Frey! Bringin’ the blog back. Inspirin’ people. High fives all around!
Just because we haven’t been blogging doesn’t mean we stopped listening to music. For the return I’m posting my current obsession - Hot Chip.
I know - I’m always late to the party. Doesn’t mean it isn’t good music. Their album The Warning is pretty incredible. Great for working. Great for relaxin’. Great for shakin’ some booty.
I decided to show off “Tchaparian” for a variety of reasons - including my inability to actually pronounce the name of the song.
The song’s a little out-of-control. It has multiple personalities. The bass in particular goes from overly intimidating, to comically bouncy, and into a smooth dreamy chorus.
The lyrics remind me of a nursery rhyme, for some strange reason. They’re short, straight-forward, part-love-song, part-weird-nonsense. Gotta’ love it.
to bring back this fucking blog. Honestly, i missed it. A couple changes to be made here. No more themes to the blog…just posting whatever, whenever. If you hear something you like, remember a track that you couldn’t stop replaying, or just found something new, POST IT! We all want to hear it. There’s nothing better than music, and sharing new and old music is a way to get inspiration and joy out of everything (cheezy i know).
For my first post back, i’m gonna do something i didn’t do previously on the blog because i think its fitting in many ways. Some of you will hopefully get it. Before, i wanted to try and not be cliche and post something like this, but i thought it felt right for the first post back. Shit, it was either this or Necro, and Necro is a bit too dirtly for a commencement post. I’ll save that one for later…
I’m going for a Supr 1337 post, demonstrating my n00b pwning ability and what not.
Actually, I’m just sending this in from my iPhone while I wait for a flight at SFO. Still, it’s a little rad right…?
Anyway, I just got a recommendation for a band called Neon Trees (I can’t remember who from - lucky for them). So I’m trying to find it on my iPod to see if it’s any good. And I realise that Neon is the new Deer which is, in itself, the new Wolf.
Allow me to demonstrate. On my iPod, I have:
Wolfmother
Sea Wolf
Howlin’ Wolf
Wolf Parade
I also have:
Deer Tick
Deerhunter
The Deer Hunters
Deerhoof
Deerheart
And, now I have:
Neon Coyote
Neon Indian
Neon Neon
Neon Trees
And Neon Trees is so generic, it boggles the mind. I don’t mind it, but Motor Ace did it better, and about 10 years ago.
